Come Dance with Me in Ireland - Pilgrimage to Yeats Country

Sunday, March 4, 2018 @ 12:00AMSun, Mar 4, 2018 @ 12:00AM

Patrick Ball at Vagabond Blues, 642 S Alaska St, Palmer, Alaska

Harpist and Storyteller Patrick Ball returns with his new show  Come Dance with Me in Ireland - Pilgrimage to Yeats Country A musical and dramatic performance based on the life and works of  William Butler Yeats Join Celtic harper and storyteller Patrick Ball for a harp-filled, dramatic performance based on the life and works of Ireland’s greatest poet, William Butler Yeats. Come Dance with Me In Ireland will be presented on March 3rd at the Anchorage Museum Auditorium at 7:30 pm  A second show will be presented at Vagabond Blues at 6 PM on March 4th. Tickets are $25.00 and available through Centertix. In the spring of 2016, Patrick was awarded a Visiting Fellowship by the Moore Institute at the National University of Ireland, Galway to study the life and works of Ireland’s greatest poet, William Butler Yeats. Patrick spent a commendable amount of time in the Archives and Special Collections. But, if he was forced to be truthful, he would have to admit that he spent a great deal more time in the pubs of Galway and rambling around Yeats Country. He likes to think that this performance has the savor of all these influences.  A Nobel Prize winner, Yeats(1865–1939) was an Irish poet and one of the foremost figures of 20th century literature. A pillar of both the Irish and British literary establishments, he helped to found the Abbey Theatre, and in his later years served as an Irish Senator for two terms. Yeats was a driving force behind the Irish Literary Revival.  Patrick tours extensively throughout Europe, the United States and Canada, is considered one of the premier Celtic harpers and storytellers in the world today, and has recorded nine instrumental and three spoken word albums which have sold well over one-half million copies collectively and earned national awards in both the music and spoken word categories.   To hear examples of Patrick’s extraordinary brass strung harp go to  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMMPPTOMlPI . Maurice Coyle

MauryStep back to the days of the great jazz singers that touched your heart and set your feet moving.  Remember when you held your lover close and slowly danced to the lyric strains of Frank Sinatra, Toni Bennet and Ella Fitzgerald.  These were the songs with style and substance.  The melodies poured out like warm velvet and the lyrics went straight to your souls.  This is the music of the heart.  Dr. Maurice Coyle offered his interpretation of these songs. Maury grew up in a house filled with music and respect for the singer's tradition. His father, as a dental  student, once missed an audition as a singer in the Tommy Dorsey Band because of an attack of appendicitis. Maury reveals his fascination and love for this music by sharing both well-known songs and some  nearly forgotten ones that will be sure to bring a smile to the faces and hearts of all listeners.

Just What the Doctor Ordered

Dr Maurice Coyle brings these songs to life with a sensitive ear and a rich smooth voice. Wonderfully realized with vocal arrangements by Peggy Monaghan, piano and trio arrangements by Tom Bargelski, and Big Band arrangements by Kerry Maule, this CD succeeds in presenting these classic songs in a thoroughly contemporary style.

For the people who will hear these tunes for the first time, they represent the golden age of song writing. These songs were created in a time when the words were paramount, followed closely by and unforgettable and moving melody. Songs were intended to transport the listener to new places and take them away for the concerns of everyday life. In our modern times, these ballads may well be "Just What the Doctor Ordered"

Tracks include:

You're Driving Me CrazyDr orders
Nice Work if You Can Get It
Guess I'll Hang my Tears Out to Dry
But Not For Me
What'll I Do
Change Partners
It's Easy to Remember
Easy To Love
Guess I'll Have to Change My Plans

Every Time We Say Goodbye
Fly me to the Moon

Vital Signs

The recording studio was filled with an easy camaraderie, and the musicians were eager to begin. Mutual respect is the heart of allVital signs creative endeavors and this was evident in the actions and attitudes of the musicians and recording engineers. This was music as team sports - you rely on the efforts and skills of the individual players to deliver the finest performance.

Maurice Coyle sipped a cup of coffee, and tossed ideas and laughter back and forth with Peggy Monaghan, the producer, and Charlie Hewitt, the engineer. Coyle was quick to offer ideas about the session, but just as eager to listen to them. In the booth, his voice was smooth as warm silk and filled with confidence and excitement.

The session musicians were impressive. Two pianists played on the project, Tom Bargelski and Melissa Bledsoe Fischer. Bargelski was the epitome of taste and timing, and a master of open spaces, allowing Coyle's vocals to shine. Fischer played with cool, intricate improvisations punctuated by explosive chords. Dirk Westfall provided a sweeping bass line with a solid foundation of rhythm. The drums were either the sensuous brushwork of John Damberg or the unshakable, but sensitive playing of Vinnie Palazzotto.

The best jazz is born in the heart and experienced through the body. Vital Signs is that kind of music - the very best.

VITAL MAURY BIO
Maurice Coyle leads two lives. He is both an accomplished vocalist, who inherited his love of jazz from his father, and an Alaskan doctor. Vital signs is his second recording to lovingly explore a selection of his favorite tunes from the golden age of songwriting.
